So I just read something interesting —
A lot of tumblr posts about self defense say “this isn’t a fight in a ring with rules, so don’t be afraid to kick a dude in the junk” or something like that. Various arguments have been made against this (i.e. it’s not an off button/might further enrage…
I practice both MMA and fighting sports, and one thing I’ve noticed is that lots of people who are used to fighting/sparring with rules usually don’t expect you to break those rules. So a front kick or a knee to the groin can totally get them by surprise.
As for the effectiveness of this strike, it is certainly true it’s not 100% infallible (not even bullets are), and that’s the reason why counterattacks should always be thrown in flurries until the attacker is neutralized or you get the chance to run away safely. It is never a good idea to rely your safety on one single strike, ‘cause lots of things could go wrong.
This said, you can ask any guy: generally a strike to the groin, even a light one, hurts like hell. Like I-just-wanna-crawl-to-the-ground-for-2-minutes hell.
